The preservation of the environment

The 2010 Loi de Modernisation de l’Agriculture et de la Pêche recognized the environmental attributes of the Committees for Fisheries. It mentions that these entities, operating public service missions, contribute to « the implementation of public policies in favor of the protection and enhancement of the environment in order to, notably, enable a sustainable management of maritime fishery and marine fish farming».

This explains why, as soon as the network project called Natura 2000 was implemented, the French professional fisherman strongly implied in this process. Contributing to all Steering Committees set-up, the CNPMEM and most of the CRPMEM also engaged in favor of the management of these sites, becoming « main » or « associate » operators in many locations on the three maritime coastlines.

Being operator is the occasion for professional organizations to involve fully in this network of protected marine areas, improving their understanding of its issues and functioning.

The elaboration of first objective documents for marine sites selected in 2008 and whose validation recently occurred, such as the Plateau du Four and the Plateau de Rochebonne have been conducted by the Committees for Fisheries. In the same perspective, these committees already expressed their will to maintain these missions by applying to the position of validated objective document facilitator.
